When it comes to building the perfect capsule wardrobe, there are a handful of basic pieces — i.e., staples that withstand time and trends and act as the essential outfit building blocks — one should always have on rotation. A classic black tank top à la Bella Hadid is certainly a must, as is a good pair (or two) of jeans. But perhaps the most sought-after item that never loses its appeal is a white button-down — and Gigi Hadid just wore the coolest one to hit the fashion scene in 2019.

Although white button-downs rank at the top of the workwear classics list, the crisp, clean top is quickly becoming a street-style must, too. That's because designers have been churning out fresh takes on the traditionally straight-edge item, reworking the silhouette in unexpected ways or adding can't-miss detailing that takes the basic into bold new territory.

Of course, Hadid is one sartorial star who's rarely spotted in a "basic" outfit — but on the off chance that she is, she proves she knows exactly how to make it look, well, un-basic. Such was the case on July 4, when the model was photographed leaving a star-studded Independence Day party, hosted at Nobu in Malibu, in a tried-and-true two-piece outfit that was anything but boring.

For the festive Thurs. outing, Hadid wore loose-fitting, light-wash jeans with a bit of distress on the knees. The denim was the something blue in her look (sticking with the July 4 color theme) and the something white was an extra-cool button-down from Australia fashion house Aje, a brand that's dedicated to "raw beauty, tough femininity, and effortless cool" — which describes Hadid's top to a T.

Hadid's button-down, from Aje's Resort 2020 collection, has a boxier fit and features loose, mid-length sleeves and patches on the front, sleeves, and back. Combine that with the way she wore it (read: half unbuttoned) and it becomes the most non-boring basic around.

The 24-year-old model topped off the look with a bright-red bag, a pair of sunglasses (complete with pearl sunglass chains), and white ankle booties. Well done, Hadid.

Though you won't be able to cop Hadid's exact button-down just yet, the market is chock-full of equally cool finds. Ahead, shop The Zoe Report's favorites to add to your lineup ASAP.
