A model wearing an Instagram Coat Trend Worth Investing In ASAP

As TZR’s Senior Social Editor, I spend a lot of time on Instagram (like, a lot). While it doesn’t make for a favorable screen-time report, it does keep me up-to-date on current trends. Each season I’ll wait to see what's bubbling up on Instagram before buying seasonal pieces, allowing me to see how pieces look IRL before making the investment. I’ve found that this leads to more thoughtful purchases, which is something my tiny NYC closet undoubtedly requires. This winter, I’ve applied this shopping framework to outerwear, narrowing it down to the five Instagram coat trends worth investing in ASAP.

Personally, I've enjoyed the resurgence of the classic trench coat, and have been living in a vintage Burberry one that I purchased at the beginning of fall. Since it’s lightweight, it’s perfect for layering, and great for travel (it was all I wore on a recent trip to Paris). That’s not to take away from the other styles that have stopped me mid scroll, though. From reimagined animal print like cowhide and zebra, to ‘90s-inspired leather, this season has no shortage of offerings. So scroll on for the crucial coat trends I've been seeing all over Instagram, and shop the iterations I'm currently adding to my cart.

Classic Trench Coat

I’m overly enthusiastic about the return of the trench coat. Its versatility is key — it can easily be dressed up or down, and pairs well with a variety of hues and textures, making it an easy pick for the minimalist or maximalist. The style is timeless, so rest assured you’re investing in something you can wear for many seasons to come.

Leather Outerwear

There’s no shortage of ‘90s-inspired styles cropping up on Instagram at the moment, but leather coats are my current favorite. I love pairing mine (a recent vintage find) with this season's oversized denim trend, a chunky knit, and square-toe boots. It’s no wonder Kaia Gerber's leather trench has quickly become her outerwear of choice — it’s inherently sleek and easy to style.

Bold-Colored Coats

As someone with an otherwise neutral palette, I’ve enjoyed incorporating a bit more color into my wardrobe through my outerwear. It's fun to pair a bright coat with an equally bold accessory, or commit to a single color scheme for a striking, monochromatic look. In my opinion, there's no easier way to dress up a t-shirt and jeans.

Cropped Puffer Jackets

Cropped puffers provide warmth without monopolizing your entire outfit. I'll layer a hooded sweatshirt underneath, and pair it with high-rise denim and sneakers for an easy, on-the-go look. It’s quickly become my go-to weekend outfit formula, and while I often opt for neutrals, I’m loving more playful iterations from brands like Saks Potts.

Animal Print Coats

Nothing against classic leopard print, but after the long reign of the leopard midi skirt, it’s refreshing to see a new wave of animal-inspired offerings. The cow-print trend continues to gain momentum and for good reason: It makes any look instantly more interesting. I'm currently shopping for styles with a bit of texture to contrast with my favorite basics.
