As the iconic Coco Chanel so eloquently put it, "If you're sad, add more lipstick and attack." The same could be said about getting dressed — if you feel like your outfit is missing that extra something, why not swipe on a bold lip? The next time you're looking to elevate even the simplest of looks, give Keira Knightley's red lipstick a try.

During a press day for her new film, The Aftermath, Knightley was photographed walking the streets of New York City on March 12. Her outfit was equally as classic as it was on trend, featuring a lace-trimmed slip dress, a cozy leopard coat, and strappy stilettos. While the look was undeniably polished all on its own, her makeup took it to the next level.

The British actor sported radiant skin, rosy cheeks, feathered brows, and cherry red lipstick. Somewhere between a matte and a gloss, the velvety finish paired perfectly with Knightley's rich brown hair, styled into a middle part with loose curls.

Simply put, red lipstick works with practically anything. Make a slip dress and a cozy coat look more formal with a swipe of rouge gloss, add a playful component to a black pantsuit with a scarlet lip tint, or prepare for a night out with a dramatic cat eye and a matte lip lacquer.

Knightley worked with celebrity makeup artist, Romy Solemani, to achieve the traditionally elegant look. Solemani boasts an impressive portfolio, having also worked with the likes of Kendall Jenner, Cara Delevingne, and Tracee Ellis Ross.

The good news? You don't need to be a professional to recreate Knightley's brilliant makeup look at home. Prep your lips with a sugar scrub, apply a hydrating balm, then choose your favorite red. Try a coral tone for spring and summer, a deep red for a colder day, or a rosy tint for a more subtle look.
