The next time you're struggling to narrow down which lip color to wear with your ensemble, look toward Emma Stone's latest red-carpet outing for some much-needed beauty inspiration. Not only is it the ultimate lesson in exactly how to match your lipstick to your outfit, but it demonstrates how a simple, coordinating swipe of color on your pout can take your look to new heights. Prepare to copy Stone's beauty look at all your holiday outings (it's that good).

On Dec. 2, Stone attended the 2018 British Independent Film Awards. And though the 30-year-old didn't end up taking home the trophy for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Favourite — a film that, did, however, nab a total of 10 awards during Sun. evening's ceremony — her red-carpet outfit certainly deserves mention. Her look managed to strike the perfect balance between playfulness and festive sophistication.

For the occasion, Stone stunned in a custom Louis Vuitton number, a designer the actor has turned to time and time again for some of her best red-carpet looks to date. The sleeveless, crimson-colored satin mini dress lands just above the knees and features a plunging neckline, a fitted bodice, and a flare-style skirt — it's perfectly simple yet elegant at the same time. As for the finishing touches? Gold Louis Vuitton pumps, sparkly earrings, and a metallic box clutch that coordinated with her shoes. The small additions added just the right amount of glitz and glamour without feeling too over-the-top.

But it wasn't only her accessories that elevated the easy, effortless dress. The real winning element in her award-ceremony ensemble? The actor's makeup. She wore a soft, gold eyeshadow, which perfectly played off of the sheen from her heels and clutch. She didn't stop her makeup-and-outfit coordination there, however; Stone added in a swipe of bright-red lipstick, a color that matched flawlessly with her crimson-hued dress. This easy beauty trick pulled everything together.

It's safe to say that Stone has perfected the art of matching your lipstick to your outfit. And Sun. evening's outing wasn't the first time she showed off her dress-and-lipstick coordinating skills. Back in Jan., while at the London screening of La La Land, the actor donned a sleek, burgundy slip dress with a dark, matching lip.

As Stone demonstrates so well, matching your lipstick to your outfit is actually quite simple — there are just a few tips and tricks to keep in mind. It's easy for the look to veer into clashing territory, so it's really important to find a lip shade in an almost-identical (if not in the exact) color as your outfit. Another thing to remember? The rest of your makeup should remain fairly simple and understated — too much, and it can look overdone.
