If you thought the dad style wave was coming to a close, think again. Gigi Hadid's black sandals and socks combo was the latest unexpected pairing that demonstrated the staying power of the ugly shoe trend, and it actually gelled quite nicely with the rest of the supermodel's moveable look. Appearing at the launch for the Wardrobe.NYC x Levis collaboration, Hadid opted for minimalism in a double-denim look courtesy of the luxury streetwear brand.

Layering an oversize denim jacket atop a button-down shirt from the new denim collection, the tastemaker stuck to basics with a white t-shirt and her favorite Missoma gold chain. Sporting simple black bike shorts, which have become a go-to staple for the fashion set from coast-to-coast, the 24-year-old added a graphic flair to the low-key look via a lightening bolt-printed handbag. With her hair pulled up into a half-bun, the former '90s baby paid homage to the decade with light-wash denim and the divisive footwear trend.

Though socks and buckled sandals likely trigger flashbacks of your offbeat uncle at the annual family BBQ, more and more celebrities are getting behind the anti-fashion trend, and Hadid's Birkenstock slides were styled with black socks in the campaign for the Valentino collaboration.

After Elle Fanning made rainbow Tevas look chic, and Kendall Jenner granted flip flops her supermodel stamp of approval, it's clear that eccentric sandals are having a major moment this summer. And now, Hadid has demonstrated how to wear the most notorious trend of all, thanks to the pared-down outfit. Even if you're not prepared to unearth the long-detested combination right away, start by choosing a Birkenstock-inspired sandal for your summer lineup. Hadid's exact style can be shopped below, along with a range of similar options sourced by The Zoe Report, ahead.
