The Detail About The Olsen Twins’ Looks Last Night You Probably Missed

When it comes to red-carpet events, the Olsen twins are notoriously selective about which ones they actually attend. But you can always count on the stylish siblings to make an appearance at some of the fashion industry's biggest gatherings of the year (read: the Met Gala and most recently, the 2019 CFDA Awards). That's right, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen headed to the Brooklyn Museum Mon. evening, and though the red carpet was chock-full of high-octane getups (looking at you, Jennifer Lopez), the designers went ultra-minimal in sleek black ensembles and understated smoky eye looks to boot. Did you really expect anything else from the always-impeccably coordinated duo, though?

On June 3, the Olsen twins were honored with the 2019 CFDA Award for Accessory Designer of the Year — an award they've received twice before, once in 2014 and then again in 2018. The sisters have also earned two other CFDAs, both of which were for Womenswear Designer of the Year, in 2012 and 2015. That means the 2019 event marked the fifth time they were bestowed with a CFDA — pretty impressive, no?

The seasoned attendees hit the awards ceremony Mon. evening in matching, all-black outfits. Ashley donned a sleek black top and a maxi skirt, accenting the classic combo with a large black clutch and pointed-toe mesh heels that were an elegant take on 2019's naked shoe trend. Mary-Kate wore a variation of Ashley's ensemble, opting for wide-leg trousers, a black top, and a floor-grazing, structured topcoat. Black strappy heels grounded the streamlined look, while a teal croc clutch provided the sole pop of color.

Much like their affinity for sleek, all-black attire, the sisters tend to stick with a particular beauty approach, too: They love a good smoky eye and they always style their long locks in easygoing, beach-y waves.

For the 2019 CFDA awards, the Olsen twins wore golden smoky eyes — courtesy of Genevieve Herr — that truly made their blue-green peepers pop. Herr likely started by swiping the neutral-brown shadow on the lid, applying the same shade to their lower lash line for a bit of added dimension. The finishing touch? A few coats of mascara and nude lipstick.

Although the colorful makeup trend is popping up everywhere right now, the Olsen twins' CFDA beauty moment proves the immense staying power of a neutral smoky eye. It's easy to recreate, and slightly less intimating to wear than, say, a slime-green eyelid à la Selena Gomez.
