Lupita Nyong’o’s Smoky Eye At The WSJ Innovator Awards Proves Glitter Can Look Chic
Nothing says winter beauty like glitz and glam, and with holiday parties fast approaching, you may be looking for ways to incorporate shimmer into your makeup looks. But when it comes to glitter, the bold trend often receives skepticism in terms of its ability to remain refined rather than excessive. Well, allow Lupita Nyong’o’s smoky eye to serve as the perfect example of an edgy but chic way to sparkle in the coming months.
On Nov. 7 at the WSJ Innovator Awards, the beauty icon stunned in a dark and daring makeup look, dazzling the red carpet whilst proving that white after Labor Day is just as achievable as grown-up glitter. The actor paired her stunning Ralph Lauren jumpsuit with glitzy diamond jewelry and a sleek clutch, but it was her eye makeup that really stood out.
Nick Barose, the artist behind many of Nyong’o's standout beauty looks, took to Instagram to break down his technique. Beginning with a black eye pencil from Proenza Schouler for Lancôme, he outlined a structural cat eye on the star. Next, Barose reached for gray, black, and pewter shadow, blending out the cat eye into a smoky wash. Finally, the artist finished off with a striking touch of glitter gel from Lemon Head, and raved about its ability to last all night long.
Who says you have to choose between a strong lip or a strong eye? Barose clearly isn't confining to that beauty rule, as he topped off the look with a deep-maroon lip for even more drama, inspired by Jazz Age glamour. Unexpectedly, he based Nyong’o's lips in the same black liner as mentioned above, followed by lip color on top. The black base allows the star's deep skin tone to maintain a dark hue without her lips going plum, Barose explained. Nyong’o finished off the look by pulling her kinky curls into an adorable pineapple, courtesy of hairstylist Vernon Francois.
Nyong’o is no stranger to pushing limits when it comes to beauty. Known to rock metallic gold and ruby-red lips, there's truly nothing the 35-year-old can't pull off, but this might be one of her most iconic looks yet.
