It's not often that a celebrity's red carpet look has the power to leave audiences truly stunned. But, when it happens, it's pure fashion magic. Katie Holmes' mixed-print Missoni gown is just such a moment. The strapless wonder is perfect inspiration for the next wedding on your calendar — and it's surprisingly easy to pull off.

Holmes' red carpet choices always strike the balance between subtly elegant and memorable. Her choice for the Life Ball 2019 on Sat. June 8th was no exception — she arrived at the spectacular event in Vienna, Austria in a shimmering ballgown. The annual party has taken place for the past 26 years, but was put on for the last time over the weekend, raising funds to fight HIV/AIDS. To commemorate the occasion, the notoriously private actor made a rare — and impactful — red carpet appearance in a pick that featured muted shades of purple, green, and blue.

Holmes' gown featured a strapless, bandeau neckline with a glittery lavender bodice that shifted into a full multicolored striped skirt. She completed her look with otherwise simple accessories, opting for a silver CASADEI clutch and strands of delicate beaded necklaces. The actor's hair was styled in an easy, straight style, and it looked like she may have chopped off a few inches for the event. Subtle eye makeup and dewy, rosy skin finished off her look.

The actor's look proved that wearing two prints in the same outfit can look completely effortless. The key to making it work lies in the color palette you choose. Her look remained cohesive because the contrasts between her chosen prints were subtle.

When trying out a similar look at home, look for pieces that have commonalities between their prints, like similar floral patterns or shades of a single color. If you are looking to make a more bold statement, look for prints with fewer things in common, like brighter colors or asymmetrical hemlines.

Keep the rest of your accessories minimal when playing with prints to avoid making your final look appear too busy. Choose pieces that merely highlight your dress rather than draw attention away from it. Neutral shoes and a coordinating bag can be the perfect finishing touches to a more bold outfit.
