The Unexpected Color Trend Taking Over The Oscars Red Carpet

Not a month has gone by since New York Fashion Week made it clear that the color pink will dominate fall in 2019. But in case you had any doubts, the Academy Awards on Feb. 24 made the trend even more obvious. From NYFW-approved neons to subtler, dreamier shades, pink Oscars gowns ruled the red carpet — and you'll want to incorporate the color into your closet ASAP after seeing how celebrities pulled it off.

Naturally, first up is Gemma Chan, who's pulled out hot pink on the red carpet before. However, the Crazy Rich Asians actress' gown also was a chance to see one of the most dramatic Valentino couture gowns off the runway. Chan went with Look 60 from Maison Valentino's Spring 2019 Haute Couture show: a pleated pink dress with a high ruffled collar. For a dress (and collar) with so much volume and color, the actress kept her beauty look on the minimal side; her hair was simply parted and pulled back like the Valentino show's models.

Maybe it was the Valentino, or maybe it was the color — but Chan's pre-Oscars Instagram picture picked up over 70,000 likes in about two hours. Safe to say the trend's probably on everyone's radar now.

Chan was far from the only red carpet star to opt for the shade. Linda Cardellini, Angela Bassett, and Helen Mirren wore similarly deep pink gowns, while other attendees went with a softer approach. Kacey Musgraves' Oscars dress was a delicate pink color — but that didn't make it any less of a showstopper. Like Chan's dress, the Giambattista Valli gown packed serious volume, with cascading layers of tulle creating a glamorous silhouette.

Meanwhile, both Maya Rudolph and Marie Kondo opted for pink dresses that added florals into the mix. Kondo's lacy Jenny Packham was covered in abstract, sequined flowers — and the minimalist guru made it look incredibly chic. So, although she was famous for her books on decluttering and Netflix show Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, it seems like Kondo is now a fashion icon as well. Is there anything she can't do?

Ahead, a few more pink Oscars gowns that had the world swooning, because you can never have enough of the rose-tinted shade.
