The '90s have had a major resurgence in fashion in 2019, so it only makes sense that the decade would make its way into beauty, too. Between the return of barrettes, crimped hair, and glossy lips, '90s beauty trends are practically everywhere you turn — and it seems it's not slowing down soon. But while those throwback styles often fall on the more experimental side of beauty, there are ways to put modern spins on certain '90s trends that make them tempting for even beauty minimalists to try. Just take a look at Karlie Kloss' most recent smoky eye and nude lip look for proof.

The model's look was courtesy of celebrity makeup artist Hung Vanngo, who combined a smoldering smoky eye and an almost-nude lip for Kloss before she attended the Nordstrom NYC Flagship Opening Party on Oct. 22. The look was reminiscent of more than one '90s trend, including the decade's favorite brownish-mauve lipstick shade and sparkly eyeshadow. However, Vanngo took a lighter hand by trading glitter for shimmer for Kloss' eyes, and opting for a more neutral lip shade with a slightly rosy hue rather than going for the darker hues of that time.

The 27-year-old kept with the '90s theme for her ensemble as well, complementing her makeup with a strappy, long-sleeved black dress with cutouts and white combat boots. It was quite a departure from Kloss' normal fresh-faced, polished looks, but it seems the model is in the mood for change lately, especially considering she debuted a fresh chop just last month.

With Halloween around the corner, there's no better time to try out a good throwback for yourself — and you'd be hard-pressed to find a '90s look more glamorous and modern than Vanngo's latest masterpiece. Ahead, a few essentials to help you recreate this look for yourself.
