Now is officially the time to get serious about investing in good winter boots. And though it can often seem like an impossible feat to find a pair that's trend forward and weather appropriate, Kaia Gerber's black combat boots prove style and practicality aren't mutually exclusive. Next time you find yourself at a standstill during your winter-shoe search, take note from the supermodel and scoop up a pair of classic Dr. Martens, a style that will, no doubt, take you back to to the '90s.

Though Cindy Crawford's daughter was born in the early aughts, she consistently infuses her best, most covetable off-duty looks with the bygone trends of the '80s and '90s (think: classic Chuck Taylors, plaid mini skirts, and leather trench coats.) The one retro-inspired piece she wears most often? A pair of lace-up, Dr. Martens boots.

On Dec. 4, Gerber was photographed on her way to the Chanel Metiers D'art Fashion Show in New York City wearing a getup that can best be described as '90s perfection. Her cold-weather ensemble consisted of a red-and-black plaid mini skirt, a sleek black top, sheer tights, a long, wool coat, and her go-to boots. And while her look harked back to some of the biggest trends of the decade (read: the checkered mini skirt and clunky, combat boots), it still managed to feel modern, too.

Gerber topped off her look with a black Prada Sidonie Shoulder Bag and dainty, gold hoops for a bit of shine. The bare-faced beauty wore her hair parted down the middle, with her signature, soft waves blowing in the wind as she walked.

The Wed. outing certainly wasn't the first time she's stepped onto the streets donning the clunky combat boots — and it wasn't the second or third, either. Gerber has worn them on countless occasions and with just about everything in her wardrobe. On Sept. 25, she was seen in Paris, sporting the same "Pascal" style, but that time, she paired them with black cargo pants, an Isabel Marant sweater, and futuristic-inspired, thin-framed sunglasses by Roberi & Fraud.

Gerber continues to make a strong case for Dr. Martens and combat boots in general. Not only do they infuse every outfit with the perfect amount of edge, but they're also a great pick for winter. That's because their thick, rubber sole offers just the right amount of traction, so you won't slip on that pesky black ice. Plus, the leather-upper ensures salt and water stains stay far away.

Combat boots, whether they be the original Dr. Martens or the countless other iterations on the market, are edgy and versatile. Style them á la Gerber with a checked mini skirt and tights for a '90s-inspired getup or rock them with your favorite high-waisted jeans and a cozy, oversized knit — the styling options are endless here.
