For too long, cropped tops have been reserved exclusively for weekends and nights out with friends. Now, Jessica Alba's cropped button down top proves they just might be appropriate for the office, too. Now you can get double duty wear out of your favorite day-off piece thanks to some seriously simple styling tricks — while still looking completely professional.

Alba appeared at a press event promoting her new show L.A's Finest in Madrid, Spain on June 10 alongside her co-star Gabrielle Union. The actor and mom-of-three opted for a boxy, short-sleeved blouse by ALAÏA that hit just slightly above her waist. She paired it with a coordinating teal and white striped high-rise midi skirt, also from the French designer. She completed her look with silver hoop earrings, white platform sandals and a matching white bracelet bag with silver chain detailing on the strap.

Alba kept the focus on her outfit with an otherwise simple yet refined beauty look. Her hair was worn long thanks to extensions and swept back into a sleek high ponytail. Her makeup was luminous and bronzed with an added pop of color in the form of a matte fuchsia lip courtesy of her beauty line, Honest Beauty.

Wearing anything cropped in a workplace setting might seem daunting, but Alba does it with ease. The trick is to wear your shorter tops with high-waisted bottoms to avoid showing too much (unless you want to, then go for it!). Plus, the slightly oversized fit on Alba's top keeps her outfit looking fashion-forward rather than overly casual or relaxed. If frigid office temperatures are a concern, opt for a long-sleeved version or throw on a blazer or jacket in a neutral shade.

When looking for a cropped top like Alba's, look for thicker fabrics that maintain a strong shape. Also, button-down and collared styles look more put-together than a simple tee or sweatshirt. If skirts aren't your thing, menswear-inspired trousers with a similar, boxier fit will give your outfit a cooler, edgier vibe. Ahead, The Zoe Report rounded up the best cropped button downs on the market that you can shop right now, including Alba's own piece if you're looking to splurge this season.
