It's officially the time when everyone's itching to take time away from their desks, and whether you're decamping to the South of France, beaches of Greece, or just rediscovering your own city, you can still get in OOO mode by dressing like you’re on vacation. Enter: short sleeve button-down shirts A.K.A the dad shirt — you know, the bowling or tropical-print iterations that looks like you plucked them straight out of your dad’s summer wardrobe.

The cool-girl style has been worn by the likes of Zoë Kravitz, Gigi Hadid, and Emma Roberts. In decades past, you'd have to try your luck in the $5 thrift store bin; but now, designers are trying out their own iterations: Rejina Pyo offered up a fruit-inspired twist this past spring, and Prada married the button-up style with the tie-dye trend. And while you're welcome to style the shirt with the other dad trends that have dominated the past few years of fashion (tourist sandals and bucket hats included), it can also look sophisticated when paired with cool denim or sleek leather.

Even if you won't be jetting off to a tropical island or European beach, check out the many ways to style the dad shirt below before you add one to your own closet.

Silk Shirt + Slip Dress

For a girlier take on the trend, try a pink satin style. Throw it over a sleek slip dress and add heels for a luxe summer ensemble that's ideal for cocktails. The tailored pink button down adds a polished vibe to a relaxed slip.

Fruit Print Shirt + Wide-Leg Denim

Fruit patterns were a sartorial favorite this summer, so try a button-down top in the quirky print. As things cool off, layer a turtleneck underneath to bring the whimsical shirt into fall. Tuck one side into a pair of wide leg jeans and add square-toe toe heels to finish off the look.

Front Tie Shirt + High-Waisted Trousers

For an alternative styling idea, tie the front of your top and pair it with high-waisted trousers. A geometric print or a an earthy color palette are both easy to style and on trend for fall when worn under a leather jacket or blazer.

Neon On Neon

The best part about a button-down shirt is its simplicity and the ability to get creative with electric, bold iterations. Style two highlighter colors together for duo that makes a statement, without being two over the top. Finish with sneakers to tone out the vibrant look.

Neon Shirt + Neutral Trousers

Mix bold colors with simple neutrals — like a pink short-sleeve button-up and taupe trousers — for a sophisticated approach to the bold shirt trend. The combo of the boxy silhouette on top and oversized trouser on the bottom is playful yet professional.

Hawaiian Shirt + Pastel Shorts

Lean into a vacation aesthetic with a Hawaiian button-down in a bright color with contrasting shorts in an equally fun hue. For a modern take on the tropical look, button the top half of your top and leave the bottom undone. Finish the look with green lucite hoops and a ladylike bag.

Boxy White Shirt + Wide-Leg Denim

If you’re not ready to fully adopt the dad shirt trend, ease into it with a crisp white button down. Pair with wide-leg denim to play off of the polish of the top and finish with a fun heel like Chanel's PVC slides.

Neutral Top + Shorts

If the myriad of bright and colorful styles prove too much, a neutral printed top can fit the bill. Style the laid-back top with a pair of trouser shorts for a relaxed weekend combination.
