How To Wear Bermuda Shorts The Gwyneth Paltrow Way

Bucket hats, "ugly" hiking sandals, and chunky dad sneakers rank at the top of 2019's list of most polarizing trends, but a new closet staple might officially nab the top spot. Bermuda shorts — bottoms with a rich history that date back over 200 years — are quickly becoming the most controversial (albeit popular) pants of choice among the celeb set, and Gwyneth Paltrow is clearly on board with the latest fashion craze. The actor recently reached for the knee-grazing style, serving up an outfit that demonstrated exactly how to wear Bermuda shorts this summer. (Hint: It's not as hard as you probably think.)

If you follow Paltrow's style closely, you probably know that she prefers to stick to a fairly low-key off-duty uniform — one that includes one-and-done rompers, easy, breezy dresses, and tried-and-true blue jeans. It should come as no surprise, then, that the actor has officially given her stamp of approval to one of the most easygoing of wardrobe staples: white Bermuda shorts that you, too, will want to work into your summer outfits ASAP.

Though Paltrow spends much of her time in sunny L.A., she flew over 5,000 miles east to attend a book signing event for The Clean Plate in London. For the outing, the author and businesswoman opted for a decidedly laid-back, quintessential summertime look that nodded to nautical style, as well. She wore crisp white, wide-leg Bermuda shorts with a blue-and-white striped sweater. Keeping it casual, Paltrow grounded the getup with a pair of Alexandre Birman slip-on sneakers with black bow detailing.

As Paltrow's latest outfit proves, it doesn't take a lot to make Bermuda shorts look cool. Although the actor chose to team the knee-grazing style with more easygoing pieces like a sweater and sneakers — a style move that's perfect if you're craving a casual warm-weather ensemble — they can just as easily be dressed up. Simply swap the sweater for a button-up and the casual kicks for strappy black heels and you have a combo that's equal parts chic, comfy, and practical. Perfect for a night out, no?
