The theme of Monday's red carpet was color. Attendees took the opportunity to squeeze in one more bold hue before summer is over for good. Hailee Steinfeld's MTV Video Music Awards beauty, for instance, coordinated with the red of her dress (and nails ... and shoes).

Monochrome is gearing up for another season, according to this 22-year-old's all-red-everything look at the 2019 VMAs. Steinfeld made her entrance in a sheer Aadnevik dress with a wispy asymmetric hem and autumnal leafy-floral details, but the red obviously didn't stop there.

This Dickinson actor sported the candy-apple color from head to toe, matching her pout to her manicure to the strappy heels on her feet. Needless to say, nobody left Steinfeld out of their best-dressed lists the morning after.

"We went for classic iconic bombshell look with an edge," her makeup artist, Carolina Gonzalez, tells The Zoe Report. "The focus of her makeup look was the red lip."

Gonzalez used all YSL Beauty products to create that old-Hollywood pout with natural-looking, glowing skin (read: the perfect aesthetic to copy in the coming season). After prepping Steinfeld's skin with a hydrating serum and primer, she went to work on a light contour (nothing major, she assures).

"I think the super high coverage look is falling out," Gonzalez says. "Along with the pronounced contouring, the heavy bases are being swapped out for a lighter, more natural look."

She predicts matte will be a major trend come fall, hence the actor's lusterless lipstick look. Steinfeld's makeup was simple and understated, allowing the pop of red to speak for itself. Even her hair, styled by Laura Polko, was down in flowy, carefree waves.

Every YSL Beauty product the makeup artist used from prep (one of the most important steps, she says) to pout, ahead.
