While many celebrities go through all of the bells and whistles associated with a red carpet — the never-ending photography flashes, the step-and-repeat, and the media interviews, to name a few — others opt for the more low-key route: sneaking in. If you were watching the 77th annual Golden Globe Awards and eagerly waiting for the power couple of music, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, to arrive on the scene you may have been disappointed. However, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find that they did make it in time for the ceremony, and Beyoncé’s 2020 Golden Globes dress touches on one of the biggest trends in fashion.

After Hollywood’s biggest stars settled into the Beverly Hilton on Jan. 5 and the Golden Globes officially took off for the night, Queen Bey — who received a nomination for Best Original Song in a Motion Picture — and husband Jay-Z casually sauntered into the room nearly unnoticed. The singer wore a fitted custom gown by Schiaparelli that featured voluminous, gold, ‘80s-inspired puff sleeves.

Without a doubt, Beyoncé’s dress ceremony is a dramatic, show-stopping option. It also proves that puff sleeves — one of the most popular trends in fashion —will be everywhere during this award’s season, starting with this year’s Golden Globes ceremony.

If Beyoncé’s Golden Globes outfit is any indication, puff sleeves are about to be everywhere for the awards circuit. As the first major ceremony to kick off the season, the Golden Globes have a way of giving everyone an idea of what to expect for the ceremonies to come — including red carpet trends.

While the Lion King actress wasn’t the only one wearing this romantic trend — it was seen on stars including Cate Blanchett, Olivia Colman, Jodie Comer, Kaitlyn Dever, Dakota Fanning, and others — her ensemble, with its larger-than-life sleeves and plunging deep V-neckline, may be the one to top them all.

Of course, this isn’t anything unexpected — it is Beyoncé, after all. With a dress that carried ample amounts of drama, the nominee kept the rest of her ensemble simple with a pair of diamond drop earrings. Her beauty look was equally simple, with sleek, straight hair to keep the focus on her outfit for the night.
