Amal Clooney Just Accepted A Major Award In A Stunning, Strappy Dress

Amal Clooney accepted a United Nations Correspondents Association Award in style on Weds. night. The newly named 2018 Global Citizen of the Year attended the organization's 70th Anniversary ceremony in New York with her Golden Globe winner husband in tow to cheer her on. And while the humanitarian was the star of the show, Amal Clooney's blue gown certainly helped her shine.

The barrister turned up to the event in the most elegant floor-length J. Mendel dress. The chiffon gown features a plunging sweetheart neckline, ultra-thin straps, and tiered frills on the torso. It's also available in pink, but Clooney opted for the winter-ready navy hue with wide, white vertical panels on the front and back.

Her wispy, pleated skirt floated behind her as she made her entrance hand-in-hand with husband George Clooney, the couple's first public appearance together since the American Film Institute's 2018 Life Achievement Awards in June.

The trendsetter glammed up her look even more — not that her gorgeous gown needed it — with a pair of sapphire and diamond earrings, a navy clutch with gold details, and matching navy heels.

Clooney took the stage at Cipriani 42nd Street to thank the journalists who were being honored at the event, too. She has been involved with the UN since 2013.

Her gown was both modern and timeless, meshing a classic column silhouette with the super-modern sheer trend. The way Clooney's skin peaked out from the silk material was reminiscent of a recent look of Meghan Markle's (who is actually one of the humanitarian's close friends).

In Oct., the Duchess of Sussex bended royal protocol a bit, as she often does, when she wore a slightly sheer pleated skirt on the last day of her 16-day royal tour with Prince Harry. In fact, the skirt was the same navy hue as Clooney's gown.

Sheer is going to be all the rage this winter — especially after Priyanka Chopra incorporated it into her Ralph Lauren gown at her highly publicized wedding on Dec. 1. Recently, Olivia Culpo also wore a sheer midi dress over a bodysuit on the red carpet of the Country Music Awards and Bella Hadid wore the boldest see-through jumpsuit to the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show afterparty.

And although Clooney is known for her classic, sophisticated style, she wasn't afraid to introduce the sheer trend into her ensemble. She opted for just enough of it to not compromise the elegant look everyone loves.

Recently, the human rights lawyer and mom of twins attended the 2018 Pennsylvania Conference for Women in a knit button-up midi dress and, before that, she rocked another trend, a burgundy velvet gown, to a gala dinner in London.

Clooney always seems to stick with her timeless look but still likes to play around with the latest trends in small, subtle doses. If you're feeling afraid of the risky sheer trend yourself, then look to the British-Lebanese barrister's dress to show you how to wear it without turning too many heads.
