What’s a good way to mix and match prints?

by The Zoe Report

Hi Rachel,

What’s a good way to mix and match prints? I see so many celebrities doing this, and would like to know if there are any guidelines I can follow to do this successfully. — Christina Z.

Christina,

This is such a great question! Mixing and matching different prints can definitely be tricky, but when done right, the outcome is fun, edgy and unexpectedly chic.

First of all, I think it is important to pick a color scheme and stick with it—just as Missoni did with neutral tones in their jaw-dropping Fall 2009 show. This way, you create a look that is playful, yet not overpowering. Think: a pastel printed top with complementing harem pants.

If you are looking to step it up a notch, you can tackle mixing geometric and tribal prints…a la Proenza Schouler’s spring runway. To achieve something similar, try piecing together a tie-dye skirt with a leopard top.

Dots and stripes also contrast well, so you can take that route as a starting point and gradually change it up. My final tip for mixing and matching ensembles is to keep all accessories neutral so your look doesn’t become too busy. Other than that, almost anything goes! xoRZ
