5 Chic Ways To Style Denim For Fashion Week

One of the most exciting parts about being an editor is attending New York Fashion Week. It’s hectic, to say the least, but the thrill of running from show to show and witnessing the newest designer pieces and next year’s trends firsthand is a one-of-a-kind experience. It’s also an opportunity to don getups that really show off personal style, but with a busy schedule it’s never ideal to waste time trying on multiple outfits. Thus, our editorial director, Nicky Deam, relies on her Levi’s® jeans as an anchor for her NYFW looks. Get to know Nicky as she shares how she makes her ensembles authentically her.

"I can't possibly tackle the busy days at New York Fashion Week without some serious caffeine, particularly as I'm still operating on California time. New York has amazing coffee so whenever possible I'll opt for Mud or other local places."

Pre-show morning coffee run: A vintage-inspired silhouette looks amazing next to this ultra-feminine frilly top from Attico. Accessorize with a raffia bag and slide-on mules like these Mari Guidicelli for that ultimate French-girl result.

"The weather in New York is always changeable at this time of year—often cold in the morning and evening, but hot during the middle of the day. Sleek jeans are an essential staple for me as I can pair them with bolder items without looking too precious, which is perfect for an evening show."

Attending a show: Elevate a high-waist skinny black jean with a plaid blazer like this one from Anine Bing—a huge trend for fall. A feminine silk cami from Protagonist gives flirty flair, while strappy metallic heels such as these fashion-forward pairs from Balenciaga nail the look.

"My home base during fashion week is an apartment in Astor Place. I love how central it is to show locations and subway stops, plus there are plenty of great locations for meetings, like the Bowery Hotel or Standard East. I try to schedule any meetings in the neighborhood so I can spend more time in the meeting rather than traveling to and from it."

Between-show meetings: For a polished yet comfortable look, a distressed mid-rise is the way to go. Add vibrancy with a printed statement coat like Nicky did with this Dolce & Gabbana number. Style with a classic striped top from COS and comfy Superga sneakers.

"I spend the majority of the day dashing around the city for shows, so I keep my evening engagements as local as possible. One of my favorite haunts, The Lafayette Grand Cafe & Bakery, has a killer bartender, great food and is spacious enough that you can linger with friends."

Out to dinner: If you're heading out, reach for a dark low-rise 501 with unfinished hem that exudes downtown vibes. A leopard-print tee provides edge and a leather moto topper like this Isabel Marant go-to finishes off the look. Pointed-toe pumps give evening polish.

"Most of the after parties involve live performances and a lot of people in a small space, so I try to keep my look unfussy and lightweight."

After-party circuit: Try a cool two-tone denim with a fringe-bedecked shell top like this one Nicky loves from Alexander Wang. These Prada platform heels and mini embroidered vintage purse are going-out staples she can't leave the house without.
