Whatever your feelings about the almighty Yeezus, you can’t deny that he knows just how to put on a show. From releasing a model casting call inviting “multiracial women only” to remaining quiet about venue details until the eleventh hour, Kanye ensured that the debut of his Yeezy Season 4 collection would be surrounded by as much controversy as his “Famous” music video. The rapper-turned-fashion designer began his show more than an hour late (perhaps to accommodate new sign-ups to Tidal, where it was scheduled to livestream at 3 pm ET), leaving hundreds of show-goers waiting in the summer heat after they had already spent an hour in traffic, as midtown buses transported them to the Roosevelt Island venue. There were reports of a model fainting before the show started, and one model even took off her shoes in the middle of the catwalk. As expected, representatives of the Kardashian-Jenner clan—Kim, Kendall and Kylie—appeared to show their support for ‘Ye himself (however, they weren’t out in full force like they were for Season 3). Viewers were also treated to cameos from Teyana Taylor and Chanel Iman on the isosceles triangle-shaped runway. Just before 5 pm ET, Kanye came out to wave at the audience and even betrayed a smile before he abruptly ran offstage. The event, as with past Yeezy installments, was heavily covered on social media and certainly goes down as one of NYFW’s most highly anticipated fashion shows.
