How Unlikely Heroes Inspired Hedi Slimane

by Kristi Mikesky

In today’s society, fashion and music often go hand in hand, and such a marriage is strongly (and industry-wide, perhaps most notably) rooted in work of Saint Laurent designer Hedi Slimane. Renowned for his “psychedelic rock” aesthetic, the influence of the music community on Slimane is undeniably at the core of his ethos—and now we have more insight as to why. In a rare interview with Yahoo Style, the designer revealed his fascination with performing artists has dated back to his childhood. As a victim of bullying in high school (he was called “queer” for not having an athletic, manly build) he turned to his musical heroes for comfort: “They looked the same [as me] and I wanted to do everything to be like them, and not hide myself in baggy clothes to avoid negative comments,” he said. It’s no wonder Slimane’s creations are heavily influenced by the tradition and style of stage wear and the notion of androgyny—qualities that parallel the allure of the iconic rockstars Slimane is characteristically drawn to. Here, some of our favorite past and present rock-‘n’-rolling muses of the brilliant designer.
