Sometimes it can be hard to muster up excitement for seeing the same celebrities in semi-predictable red carpet gowns, year after year. Luckily, there are always a few newly arrived (on the awards circuit, at least) starlets to steal the spotlight each season. Here are our top five picks for the ones to watch this year.
After having landed the cover of Vogue, ‘up-and-coming’ is probably no longer as appropriate a description of Danish Girl star and dual Golden Globe nominee Alicia Vikander as would be ‘arrived.’ Still, this year marks her first real turn as a focal point on the red carpet and, given her sartorial history, we don’t expect the Swedish actress’ choices to disappoint.
Though only 26 years-old, Brie Larson has a list of credits a mile long. Still, this will be considered the year she ‘broke out,’ not as the straight (wo)man to Amy Schumer’s, well, trainwreck in the comedy Trainwreck, but for her Golden Globe-nominated, tearjerker of a performance in Room. As such, we expect to see her red carpet game, already very much on point, reach new heights this season.
While she’s not nominated—Stars Wars wasn’t submitted for awards consideration for fear of leaked spoilers—we very much doubt Hollywood’s newest darling will skip the season altogether. With the help of stylist Petra Flannery, who also works with Emma Stone and Amy Adams, Daisy’s already winning every carpet she walks.
Taraji P. Henson
Cookie, the role Taraji P. Henson plays on Empire, is one of those larger than life characters that makes it difficult to distinguish the pretend person from the real one playing her. It’s unlikely, however, that Taraji will show up to the carpet this year dressed with quite as much gusto as Cookie would be, but that doesn’t mean she won’t bring it all the same. If past looks are any indication, we expect Taraji to show up looking every inch the queen bee she plays on TV, albeit bedecked with a touch more restraint than would be her on-screen alter ego.
This former model is no stranger to style, and has already been wowing on runways and red carpets alike for some time now; however, because of her Globes nomination, we expect this year to be her biggest yet, and her less-traditional tastes will likely be a welcome breath of fresh air amidst a sea of somewhat predictable ball gowns.
