It's easy to get in the routine of turning to your tried-and-true black puffer jacket for all of your cold-weather needs. After all, it's an incredibly versatile piece and it's easy to wear. But, take one look at Lupita Nyong'o’s yellow puffer coat and you might reconsider reaching for your go-to top layer ever again. Even if you typically tend to stay away from prints, the actor's jacket makes a convincing case for trying your hand at bold outerwear this season.
On Jan. 27, Nyong'o walked the silver carpet at the 2019 SAG Awards in the most breathtaking, custom Vera Wang gown that was the epitome of "business on top, party on the bottom." It featured a bustier-inspired blazer that extended into a sheer, crystal-embellished column skirt. A day later, the actor swapped her glamorous, black-tie attire for something a bit more cold-weather friendly for an appearance at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.
Nyong'o was photographed on Jan. 28 in Park City, Utah, where she was busy promoting her latest movie project, Little Monsters. For the outing, the Black Panther star wore a getup that's surprisingly easy to recreate — one you can easily carry through the rest of winter, too. Nyong'o opted for black skinnies, a turtleneck sweater, and chunky-heeled ankle boots. The otherwise casual wardrobe staples were instantly elevated by the hero piece in her look: a bold, Baroque-printed Versace puffer coat.
Nyong'o's Versace coat infused her look with punchy, eye-catching elements. The yellow print was a standout, of course, but the gold-tone hardware and waist belt are noteworthy details, as well. She topped off her West Coast winter look with a simple black beanie and UV-blocking sunglasses — two essentials to always have on hand.
This season, puffer coats have reigned supreme. Style mavens like Bella Hadid and Priyanka Chopra have been spotted in the fluffy, cloud-like outerwear, and while they opted for simple, one-toned picks, many are sure to follow Nyong'o's lead in opting for louder styles.
