Katie Holmes Found A Bold Way To Elevate Your Favorite Basics

Katie Holmes just stepped up her suit game. The actor strutted through New York City on Weds. in a Prada two-piece that combined two of the biggest trends of the season. Katie Holmes' feather-trimmed pantsuit will have you clearing out space in your closet for feathery pieces this fall.

The 39-year-old hopped aboard the menswear trend a month ago, when she sported slicked-back hair and a loose, white shirtdress to New York Fashion Week, but this time, her pantsuit featured a playful twist. The granite gray Prada blazer and cropped trouser set is your average suit silhouette, elevated by fluffy ostrich-feather cuffs around the wrists and ankles. Holmes wore it loose with a sleek bun, a gold pendant, black clutch, and simple black strappy sandals.

Model Emily Ratajkowski wore the same outfit when she hosted the Kerastase Club event at West Hollywood's Chateau Marmont in June, only with a deeper neckline and white sandal heels instead of black.

Tailored suits are all the rage this fall. Earlier in the season, Blake Lively solidified the trend with a full-on suit parade, sporting one after another in corduroy, checkered print, lime green, with neckties and walking sticks, and other fun twists. Now Holmes' Prada set has stolen from another emerging craze: feathers.

Wispy feathers started cropping up on the hem of skirts, on shoulders, and around necklines during Fall/Winter Fashion Week presentations, and they've since crept into everything from handbags to tank tops and now, sophisticated pantsuits like Holmes'. Less than a week before the former Dawson's Creek actor sported her fun suit, Naomi Campbell wore an elegant feather dress and matching overcoat to Princess Eugenie's royal wedding and Beyoncé wore a shimmery feather Ralph & Russo gown when she performed at the City of Hope charity event.

This playful detail is the best way to liven up any basic silhouette. Before going full-feather skirt, though, opt for subtle feathery trims on straps, around the hem of a pair of pants, or on a handbag. Ease the trend into your wardrobe little by little and let the bold feature speak for itself with simple pairings. Like Holmes, you'll want to find a balance between too basic and too bold.
