Janelle Monáe Just Wore A High-Fashion Take On Sequins (& You’ll Want To Follow Suit)
Sequins, glitter, and other materials that twinkle haven't exactly been considered sophisticated for the past couple decades. But now, it's looking like sparkle is coming back in style. Look no further than Janelle Monáe's sequin dress to show you the modern way to wear this retro trend.
The singer is known for her super-funky style. She's sported everything from bold capes to braided mohawks on the red carpet, and she's especially known for her signature suits. This time, though, the bold outfit Monáe is wearing is actually an emerging trend that you should consider, too.
Sequins are about to have a moment, and this Grammy Award nominee is, of course, among the first to wear them. She attended Chanel's Pre-Fall 2019 show in New York City on Tues. evening wearing a striped and sequined dress by the brand. The colorful ensemble is actually a two-piece crop top and maxi-skirt set. With black and white stripes on the tweed bodice, it features multi-hued sequins on the sleeves, neckline, and around the waist.
The crop top has trendy puffy sleeves while the skirt is figure-fitting and flared slightly at the bottom. It debuted on Chanel's Spring 2019 runway, paired with a beret, layered bracelets, white tights, and silver Mary Jane flats. Monet opted, rather, for black and white heels and a fashion-forward embellished turban. She carried a leather crossbody circle bag, also by Chanel.
Monáe certainly isn't the only one sporting sequins lately. Even a royal has hopped aboard this trend, with Meghan Markle wearing a black-and-white sequin halter top by Safiyaa to a Royal Variety Performance in London just a couple weeks before.
Celebrities like Emma Roberts, Gabrielle Union, and Olivia Wilde have also been sporting shiny looks lately. And the ultimate style icon, Sarah Jessica Parker, has channeled her Sex in the City character by incorporating glitter and sequins into countless designs for her shoe line, too.
Though eye-catchingly glitzy, the throwback trend is nothing to be too afraid of. While glitter and sequins perhaps had a reputation for being tacky in the past, designers like Rodarte, Roberto Cavalli, and Dolce & Gabbanna have brought them back with high-fashion looks. Jewels, glitter, and sequins were speckled throughout New York Fashion Week's Spring 2019 runways, so you'd better start stocking up on shiny things now.
There's no better time to introduce sequins into your wardrobe than now, either. Holiday get-togethers and New Year's Eve parties are the perfect occasions to add a bit of sparkle to your outfit. Ahead, The Zoe Report's favorite Janelle Monáe-approved sequin pieces just for you.
