16 Long-Lasting Lipsticks That Makeup Artists Actually Use Themselves
Lipsticks add color, personality, and confidence to your look with just a few swipes, but very few withstand your morning latte, lunchtime salad, and after-work cocktails. But a quality long-lasting lipstick is your secret weapon to keeping your lips intact without having to check your front-facing camera every five minutes. And makeup artists — who test virtually everything — know the best ones... because they use them on theirselves.
"Color and texture are first and foremost when choosing a lasting formula. It needs to have a softer texture. If lips are a little on the drier side, I’ll exfoliate and apply balm while doing the rest of the makeup so the lips are primed and ready," says Robert Sesnek, a makeup artist who works with Kristin Cavallari, Chrissy Teigen, and Hailey Baldwin. "Color choices are also make or break with a lip product. They have the right shades and ability to go from one application to building up several coats for the truest tone and shade of that color."
Too many times, the texture of a lip color feels dry. And then when you actually apply it to your lips, the dryness immediately bleeds off, smearing on everything in sight. "If your main concern is your lipstick being non-transferable with long lasting ability, I’d recommend the Sephora Cream Lip Stain Liquid Lipstick," Rachel Toledo, a makeup artist who works with Bethenny Frankel, Olivia Palermo, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, says. "It's the best one out there. The red shade looks great on everyone. I once used it on a celeb chef while filming a segment with steam in a hot kitchen and that stain did not budge all day!"
Other important factors include color payoff, too, depending on the look you're going for. "I always look to see if it's opaque enough," Lakeisha Dale, an editorial makeup artist, says. "And if it feels comfortable on my lips. No one wants to walk around with lips that feel parched."
Ahead, see the lipsticks that last through everything, according to the pros who've tried them all.
"I'm obsessed with the color pillow talk," Toledo says. It's no surprise why, the color is a rich, nude- pink that remains creamy even after applying.
This light nude is a favorite of Emily Jimison, a makeup artist and founder of Seven Seven Cosmetics. The lipstick is comprised of fig milk which keeps lips comfortable and refreshed.
"If you pick a matte lipstick, it's less likely to transfer," Jimison explains.
"I love the applicator and the fact that the product dries super matte and it doesn’t move! This shade is the perfect neutral tone for day and night," Tobi Henney, a celebrity makeup artist tells TZR — Henney works with Karlie Kloss, and Ashley Graham.
This highly-pigmented shade is also favorited by Sesnek, and to make sure that the lipstick has fully absorbed into the lips, "I’ll have clients blot a tissue until the desired color intensity is achieved and the product has dried," he says.
Toledo also recommends this shade. The matte finish stays put, while your lips remained defined all day.
"The colors are vibrant and the texture feels amazing in this lipstick," Toledo says.
"This really feels amazing on the lips and builds nicely to create a very long lasting stain," says Molly Stern, who works with Cara Delevigne, and Reese Witherspoon.
"I love Bawse Lady from The Lip Bar because of the color — it's simply beautiful. They use quality ingredients (vegan and cruelty-free). Most importantly, they are a Black-owned beauty brand. It's important for me to see people like me being pioneers in an industry that I love," Dale says.
"This has a classic feel on the lips, but works great when layered to stain the lips for an all-night smooch," Stern adds.
Dale put this shade to the test at her wedding. "The Nars Power Matte lasted through the ceremony and reception for my wedding day, no touching up."
Sesnek uses this shade by Fenty. The formula is lightweight and you'll barely notice that you're wearing anything on your lips.
Toldeo voices the complaint of many when wearing lipstick, "I personally hate the feeling of wearing lipstick, but this brand glides on and doesn’t feel drying or waxy."
"It's an amazing shade for a deep, rich, and bright burgundy," Sesnek says.
"These stay on great and even with the matte finish, they feel super moisturizing. The jojoba oil in it quenches dryness on the lips," Stern explains.
