Skip The Mall And Shop Small At These LA Stores

by Ashley Tibbits

If you’ve taken a vow to spend your hard-earned dollars on small, local businesses, then today’s the day to bust out that wallet. Small Business Saturday encourages shoppers to support independently-owned brands and boutiques, and the occasion won’t play second fiddle to Black Friday — many shops and makers all over are offering irresistible incentive to #shopsmall instead of giving your cash to major corporations. Hop online and see how your local spots are celebrating, or if you’re an Angeleno, we’ve taken the liberty of rounding up a few of our favorite LA businesses to buy clothes, housewares, beauty goods, and more. Now, get out there and spend wisely!

@lilyashwell

LA designer Lily Ashwell's signature bias cut silk slips, linen overalls, and baby soft tees aren't the only items you can save 25% on for Small Business Saturday; a well-curated selection of home goods, artsy books, and more are all fair game both in Ashwell's sweet Venice shop, or online. 566 Rose Ave, Venice.

@twigandtwine

After brunching at another beloved local spot, Sqirl, walk a few doors down to Twig & Twine, where fresh, seasonal blooms are 25% off, sale books are 50% off, and the chic gift options are seriously endless. 716 N Virgil Ave, Los Angeles.

@thesedays.la

DTLA boutique/gallery hybrid These Days LA ups the #shopsmall ante today with a selection of locally made goods like ceramics, kids clothing, macrame bags and more plus vintage texts — all cherry-picked by KKIBO artist Jo Abellera as part of her month-long residency. 118 Winston St, Los Angeles.

@otherwild

Among the offerings at feminist/LGBTQ-friendly shop Otherwild (which also has a location in NYC) are organic apothecary items, magical elixirs, and body-positive paraphernalia. 1768 N Vermont Ave, Los Angeles.

@shopshorthand

Pretty paperie Shorthand stocks everything you need for your desktop, including notepads, writing instruments, calendars, and even itty bitty succulents, plus their gift wrap and card game is on point. 5028 York Blvd, Los Angeles.

@dreamcollectivestudio

For one-of-a-kind ceramics, handmade fine jewelry, and other cool, creative wares, Dream Collective has you covered. This weekend they're also donating a portion of sales to Standing Rock, and discounting some jewelry, clothing, and shoes by up to 30%. 1404 Micheltorena St, Los Angeles.

@friend_mart

Artist Tuesday Bassen's Chinatown shop Friend Mart carries an impressive array of pins, patches, cheeky housewares, clothing and accessories by local makers (including her own best-selling stuff). For Small Business Saturday, shoppers can scoop up marked-down vintage via Whurl and get jackets, tees, and more custom-embroidered. 970 N Broadway #105, Los Angeles.
