What To Gift New Friends You Know Well, But Not That Well

As time continues to move at an unbelievable speed, each year brings a whole new set of milestones, experiences, memories, and of course, friendships. No matter what stage of life you’re in, it’s never too late to make new friends — and despite the length of your relationships, some of those new connections are inexplicably special. So when the holiday season of giving rolls in, it’s only natural to add them to your list of recipients. However, even if that bond is strong, having gift ideas for a new friend you’ve known for less than a year can be just as tough as selecting a present for someone you’ve known for a lifetime.

When it comes to finding the perfect gift for a friend whose tastes and interests have yet to be completely known is easier said than done — not to mention finding something that’s simply appropriate for such a new friendship. However, there are always a handful of foolproof gifts you can rely on during the holiday season, according to Sara Skirboll, the resident shopping and trends expert at RetailMeNot.

“When it comes to shopping for those you don’t know, I suggest keeping it simple and not overthink your gift,” Skirboll tells The Zoe Report in an email.

If you have a better idea of what your friend likes, she also suggests to think about a coffee table book, which can be more personal. At the end of the day, you can’t go wrong with something simple. If they love to travel, opt for Taschen’s 100 Getaways Around the World, which will spark their inner jet setter. Always taking note of their outfits? They’ll probably love Condé Nast’s Vogue: The Editor’s Eye, which has iconic photo shoots from a number of past Vogue issues and costs $59.99. Or, if you happen to know that they recently returned from a vacation, give them a beautiful picture frame, like this Project 62 Metal Frame, to give them a place to keep photos from the experience.

“When in doubt, go basic. No one ever said no to a beautiful orchid or succulent or a nice bottle of wine or champagne,” Skirboll shares. Case in point? This Little Black Box from WineSociety, which costs $49, is the perfect set for a friend, especially if you don’t know what type of wine they prefer.

Another simple (but always welcome) gift is a candle — because, naturally, you can never have too many candles. The Palo Santo 14 Classic Candle from Le Labo is a great option to give someone since it's the brand’s signature scent. Or, if you want to go a more unconventional fragrance route, why not try an ambient spray? This Pomandére Ambiance Spray in Lavender and Rosemary, $34, is one that anyone will love to have in their home.

While you might still be getting to know the newest relationships in your life, that doesn’t mean you can’t give them a holiday present without thought. With Skirboll’s tips and suggestions, you’ll be able to navigate holiday shopping for each of your most new friends like a pro.
