This afternoon in Paris, legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath painted the town gold—or rather, painted the faces of the city’s most beautiful inhabitants with the 24-karat hue. To celebrate the first product from her makeup line, a multifunctional formula dubbed Gold001, McGrath turned the Tuileries garden into a renegade operation that would’ve made Midas jealous, adorning the mugs of models—think Bella Hadid, Stella Maxwell, etc—and the Parisian public alike with pots of her glittering goop. After the artist herself created a gilded lip for Prada’s Spring 2016 show just days before, our minds also wandered to Creatures Of The Wind’s recent foil-like eyeshadow treatment for the runway and Tom Ford’s Fall 2015 campaign. Clearly, gold is having a moment—and while some might find it intimidating, we predict its potential to become as ubiquitous as another bold beauty trend: the red lip. The trick to pulling it off with aplomb is by keeping the rest of the face bare (or, nearly bare) and rocking a swipe of the color on your eyelids, then structuring your outfit around minimal basics such as a neutral sweater, distressed jeans, high tops and a sleek purse. Will the effect take some getting used to? Probably. But does it show promise to keep you looking completely dazzling, whether or not you find yourself frolicking in a French garden? Absolutely.
