The Crazy Way Women Are Trimming Their Hair

by Stephanie Montes

We’ve always known women are willing to do some strange things in the name of beauty (we include ourselves in this generalization), but now we think we may have seen everything. As evidenced in this of Alessandra Ambrosio at the Laces and Hair salon in São Paolo, Brazil, women have turned to an open flame (yes, you read that correctly) to burn off split ends. No, we are not kidding. The process takes hours and involves tightly twisting small sections of hair and holding a lit candle up to them to burn off the pieces that stick out. The flame is run along the entire section of hair, so the process looks to us a little like a disaster waiting to happen, but maybe we’re paranoid. (For the record, the photo of Alessandra features a rather large fire extinguisher behind her.) Although this method has been a go-to for Brazilian beauties for decades, we feel pretty confident in the age-old method of a scissors and comb. After all, if it’s not broken, why set it on fire?
