#TBT Beauty: Gwyneth Paltrow, Circa 1998

by Kate Wolfson

In honor of the impeding 4th of July long weekend, we’re honoring a national treasure of the beauty inspiration variety: Gwyneth Paltrow. More specifically, her cool-girl crop cut from the 1998 rom-com, Sliding Doors. The easy ‘do is ideal for keeping unruly, short strands in check without sacrificing an ounce sleekness.

All you need to get the look is some hairspray, a handful of bobby pins (or a pretty beret) and this nifty tutorial.

Step By Step

Step 1

Start with dry, or preferably, day-old hair (feel free to spritz with dry shampoo to add a bit of texture) and create a deep side part.

Step 2

Starting from the back of the head, use a bobby pin as your tool to create a zig-zag design in the part. When finished, lightly spritz with hair spray to keep flyaways at bay.

Step 3

To achieve a smooth finish, secure bangs on both sides of the head with eye-catching berettes or bobby pins (we chose gold ones for a dash of glitz).

Step 4

Finish by tucking stray locks behind your ears and another quick coat of hair spray.
