The Best Mature Skin Serums That Dermatologists Recommend

Share

Your skin is constantly evolving — going through stages of cell turnover, strengthening, and restoration. And like you, it ages. And with that comes visible changes like fine lines, wrinkles, and dullness which all call for special attention and specific skincare products like a serum for mature skin.

"As your skin ages, look for a serum that addresses your skins specific needs. The skin commonly develops brown spots, lines and wrinkles, laxity, dryness, and dullness, all of which can be addressed with specific [formulas]," Dr. Joshua Zeichner, Director of Cosmetic & Clinical Research in Dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, tells TZR.

But no skincare product — even one for a specific age range — is a one-size-fits-all: For those with dry skin, look for vitamin E (an antioxidant, that protects cells from oxidative damage); niacinamide (which improves skin elasticity and increases ceramide levels in skin); glycolic acid (which gently exfoliates and lightens discoloration); and hyaluronic acid (which retains moisture), according to Dr. Howard D. Sobel, New York City dermatologist and founder of Sobel Skin, notes. For those with dull looking skin, antioxidants like green tea extract, resveratrol, and ferulic acid are smart ingredients to look for, too.

To ensure the full benefits of your serum is absorbed into your skin, be sure to apply it after washing your face. "I'd apply it to a dry face and neck usually twice daily, but there's nothing wrong with doing it at night only," says Dr. Raheleh Sarbaziha, an aesthetic medicine and anti-aging expert. "I recommend keeping a tailored but simple skin care regimen with good quality skin products that you follow religiously."

Ahead, 12 serums that are worth adding to that well-choreographed routine.

"Formulated with grapefruit stem cell extract and epidermal growth factor, this age prevention serum helps reduce the early signs of visible aging and leaves skin glowing," Dr. Rahi says.

This serum helps with fine lines and wrinkles by using a technology that allows sustained release of retinols, so it's gentler on the skin, Dr. Rahi says.

This formula by Flora + Bast uses CBD oil to help balance the skin and provide it with fatty acids that help plump the skin, Dr. Rahi says.

The formula in this serum contains retinol and zinc, a powerful combination for reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

The hyaluronic acid and B5 in this formula helps to plump the skin and replenish the barrier.

"This two-in-one formula combines potent anti-aging plant extracts (such as turmeric) in a water-and-oil-soluble combo that blends together to boost your lipid barrier as well as your hydration levels for smoother, radiant and firmer skin," Dr. Sobel says.

Dr. Sobel says that this fast absorbing, non-greasy formula is specially designed to regenerate surface cells and deliver anti-aging ingredients deep into the skin's surface.

Another dermatologist favorite, Immortelle Overnight Reset Oil-in-Serum helps the skin's restorative processes, especially at night. Your skin will look youthful and alive thanks to beta carotene, a plant pigment that contains vitamin A — the same ingredient that retinol is derived from.

Chockfull of vitamin C, this serum helps slough away dark marks.

"The hyaluronic acid in this serum is like a sponge that pulls hydration to the outer skin layer. This helps plump, fill in lines, and it also helps to improve radiance by hydrating the skin and allowing for better light reflection," Dr. Zeichner says.

Dr. Zeichner says that this serum contains botanical extracts that help to stimulate the activity of fiberglass, which are cells that produce collagen. It helps strengthen the skin foundation and improves sagging skin.

The ingredients in this serum by Elemis contains bio-actives such as anti-aging tri-peptides that that help to keep the elasticity in mature skin.
