It doesn't get more classic than a crisp white shirt. It's a piece that stirs up images of style icons like Katharine Hepburn and Grace Kelly, and its timeless, versatile nature has allowed it to move through the decades seamlessly, arguably making it the ultimate wardrobe essential. But as is the case with any well-worn item, your current selection is likely ready for a refresh, making the launch of COS' White Shirt Project a perfect opportunity to shop new styles for spring.

COS' eight-piece capsule collection includes three men's and five women's styles that'll be available for purchase online and in Los Angeles stores on Feb. 25. And, while the pieces from the store that's known for delivering quality staples with a minimalist sensibility look high-end, luckily, they don't carry a luxury price tag, ranging from $89 to $115.

The women's offering is composed of five different 100 percent cotton silhouettes. Each design features details that give the timeless white shirt a modern twist. The use of proportion and movement allow for the shirts to really hold their own as the key piece in a look. Case in point: The Voluminous Grandad Shirt, $99, has a curved seam at the back to give it a cocoon shape and updates the long sleeves with wide cuffs.

"The white shirt is intrinsic to the COS DNA and we remain fascinated by the endless opportunities to reinvent this wardrobe staple," said Karin Gustafsson, COS Creative Director, in a press release from the brand. "Subtle changes to proportions, silhouettes and details define character and the White Shirt Project offers a strong selection of innovative and functional pieces that celebrate traditional and contemporary craftsmanship.”

The Classic Grandad Shirt will easily become a core piece in your closet, but if you're after a more relaxed fit, opt for the shaped shirt silhouette. For those shoppers who end up styling their oversized white tops with a belt, you may find the tie-waist shirt, $99, to your liking, as it eliminates the need for an extra accessory.

Looking for a longer style? Try the utilitarian shirt, $115, which features a large patch pocket on the front as well as sleek side slits. Pair it up with a floor-grazing trouser for the office; the clean lines of the elongated silhouettes will keep your look elevated. As for the weekend? It'll look just as sophisticated when worn with dark denim straight-leg jeans and a pair of mules.
