The Only 7 Met Gala Looks That Matter, According To TZR's Senior Fashion Editor

For some, experiencing a red carpet is about taking in every. Single. Look. At the Met Gala, there's a lot of look to take in, which makes for an exhausting amount of scrolling and live-streaming — especially for a Monday night. Well, here's the good news. As The Zoe Report's senior fashion editor, I'm here to do the heavy lifting for your and round up my editor-favorite looks from the 2019 Met Gala in all its Camp-themed glory.

Since this year's theme was all about leaning into the less-serious side of fashion, the red carpet was especially over-the-top, complete with feathers, sequins, and even complete outfit changes. Though everyone has a different set of contingencies when it comes to breaking down exactly what qualifies someone for the title of best dressed, my litmus test is fairly straightforward. Firstly, is the look on theme? Second, does it elicit an emotional reaction — an audible gasp, a jaw drop, even just a wry smile? And lastly, does it feel like a bit of a risk for the wearer? The Met Gala is not the red carpet to play it safe (the don't call it the Super Bowl of fashion for nothing). Below, find a breakdown of who made this year's list of best dressed, along with my handy explainers as to exactly why.

Zendaya

Zendaya arrived on the carpet wearing custom Tommy Hilfiger alongside her stylist Law Roach, who pulled out a wand and actually cast a spell that lit her dress up. Add to that the fact that the actress managed to leave a glass slipper behind on her way up the stairs, and it was a moment.

Laverne Cox

Cox exuded over-the-top glamour in a gown by Christian Siriano that celebrated camp in an especially elegant way.

Lupita Nyong'o

Lupita masterfully leaned into the theme of the evening wearing a rainbow-bright look from Versace. Hairstylist Vernon Francis also added five golden Afro picks to complete the look.

Kacey Musgraves

The singer swapped out her brunette locks for a blonde Barbie-inspired look complete with a Moschino outfit in hot pink.

Billy Porter
