Maison Margiela’s Latest Collection Takes An Unexpected Approach To Glamour

by Angela Melero

We love when a brand puts a non-traditional spin on a classic ideal. So we were floored when Maison Margiela debuted its Autumn/Winter 2017 Haute Couture Collection, featuring an eclectic mix of artisanal elements with traditional glamorous touches, at its pop-up at Maxfield in Los Angeles. Designed by creative director John Galliano, the 13-piece exhibition was powerfully unexpected as it introduced cold-weather staples like trench coats, evening dresses and layered garments in an atypical cocktail of shapes and materials (think thick wool, leather belts and piping with feathered and crystalized accents). In addition to the collection, the pop-up featured the brand’s limited-edition T-shirt, which is exclusive to Maxfield. The tee epitomizes our current social-media-entrenched culture with an animated face motif that draws from selfie filters from social apps. Check out our highlights from the inspiring exhibition below.
