New Label To Love: Chalk

by Jessica Amento

Calling all lovers of chic, easy-to-wear clothes! There is a new label on the block you need to know about: Chalk. From NY-based designer Christina Minasian (the brains behind downtown-to-uptown line Pencey) comes this effortless collection full of special separates that really can go from the office to out. Featuring a chiefly black and white palette with splashes of pretty prints along the way, Chalk’s debut assortment is sure to freshen up your spring wardrobe. Here, Christina shares her thoughts on the collection, her biggest style muse and more.

How she began her fashion career… “I started as a visual merchandiser at Ralph Lauren and did stints as a stylist and buyer before segueing into design. In my time in the industry I’ve come to learn that practicality and versatility are really important in how people spend their money on clothes.”

On her biggest style muse… “I’ve always admired Princess Diana. I love that she was always elegant and proper yet equally forward in her style.”

How Chalk found its name… “The name Chalk means clean, fresh and minimal. Using ‘chalk’ you have the basis to create so many new things.”

The principle behind Chalk… “We wanted to create a collection that was wearable and chic but wasn’t trendy and disposable. The Chalk customer desires an elevated aesthetic that is still accessible to the everyday modern woman. The retail prices range from $60-$360 for the first collection.”

On Pencey vs. Chalk… “The similarity ends with me designing the two collections. Chalk is really a totally new concept which offers a more polished and classic look.”

On her favorite piece in the collection… “My favorite piece is our Heavy Crepe Pony Blazer. It has just the right level of detail that make it versatile enough to wear in a dressy or casual way. You can either wear it with a pair of jean shorts and one of our tees or for a more polished look you could wear it with our Hook Dress.”

Her design philosophy… “In my time in fashion I’ve realized that girls just want to look good. I wanted to create a collection that makes every girl feel confident and polished in her everyday life without being stuffy.”

Her advice to anyone just starting out in the industry… “Develop a point of view and stick with it.”
