Can you suggest some classic-yet-contemporary men’s looks?
Dear Rachel,
I wish you would do a section for advice on menswear. We watch your show too and would love advice from you. Can you suggest some great, classic-yet-contemporary men’s’ looks with an edge?
Your fan,
Joel
Joel,
To Joel and all other men who have sent me style queries—and ladies who want to point their guy in the right direction—it thrills me to dish out some pointers. Get ready to take some notes 🙂
When it comes to fashion, you will find that many of the same rules that apply to woman also ring true for fellows. You know…Wear thoughtfully-chosen jewelry. Tailor your clothes to fit like a glove. Add a pop of color however you can. My husband is a man of neutrals and struggles with the last one, but trust me, it is a small detail that makes a huge difference.
Try layering a rich colored shirt under a cardigan or sweater, then throw on a thin scarf in a bold print above or below the collar. A scarf is hands-down one of my favorite accessories for guys—it will instantly add personality to any outfit, no matter the time of year.
Invest in designer jeans. Denim has evolved over the years and now works with everything from business casual attire to black tie. There is no excuse to not own a pair or several. At the moment, I am also really feeling a slouchy trouser in wool or cashmere…so try some of those too.
Rock a leather jacket. Just like for girls, this timeless style is a huge trend for men right now and it will not be going away anytime soon. Find one you love and wear it with everything.
Concerning footwear, my current favorite look for guys is a great pair of motorcycle or ankle boots. Vintage or new…the more distressed, the better. They will easily take you from day to night. For a polished look, try some that don’t lace-up, but slip-on with a chunky sole.
The final touch I like to put on any cool dude ensemble is a dope messenger bag, so trade in your briefcase for an across-body “man purse” in brown, army green or black for an instant element of cool.
There is much more to be said on men’s fashion, but I will leave you with this homework to start and check in again in a few weeks… xoRZ
