What To Wear To Work At A Fashion Startup

This week we tackled what to wear on a job interview at a law firm or creative office but what’s the deal with dress codes at startups? Today Alisa Gould-Simon, CEO of fashion inspiration app Pose, shares 6 staples for her Venice-based office. Spoiler alert: quirky prints are commonplace.

Once you’ve picked up Alisa’s tips be sure to check out Pose’s just-launched marketplace, which let’s you shop the closets of CEOs, creative types, and startup cuties from around the world. What’s really genius: in addition to spending cold hard cash, you can also score new pieces by trading with other users.

Modern Suiting

"I bought this Helmut Lang blazer with my holiday bonus from Pose two years ago. I very rarely pay retail for anything but I’m so glad I did in this case. The structured shoulders and cropped back give the blazer just enough avant-garde flair to keep it feeling unique, and the perfectly-tailored fit is timeless. I’ve worn this to countless investor meetings and work events where I want to feel more pulled together."

Quirky Prints

"I’m a big Zara.com shopper and love the fact that I can order a bunch of stuff and return whatever doesn’t work for free either in-store or by mail. This crop top was purchased on a whim but once I got it home I knew it was a keeper. I’ve worn it what feels like a million times with anything I have that’s high-waisted (which is a lot). As you can see, I wasn't the only one in our office who got the polka dots memo."

Dressy Shorts

"This is sort of cheating but one of my favorite pieces is from my boyfriend’s sister’s line, The Hellers. I snagged these perfectly tailored shorts with a very friendly family discount and they are by far one of my favorite pieces. I’ll add the blazer above when I want to feel like a boss, or throw on a cropped sweater to dress them down for date night."

Not-Too-High Heels

"These were a serendipitous score from Milk, a boutique in Los Angeles. They were the second-to-last-pair and on super sale. They have a 2” heel, which is perfect for running around town. And I love the leather ankle-wrap detail and nude hue, which makes them really unique."

White Blouse 2.0

"This peplum blouse was a find during a Pas de Deux sale in NYC. It was nearly two sizes two big but easy to tailor. I had it taken in to fit perfectly and have worn it dozens of times ever since."

Investment Bags

"I love the buttery yellow color of this Celine bag, which was a generous birthday gift from my boyfriend. The design is incredibly functional in that each of the three pockets snaps apart and can be reconstructed as a clutch or an over-the-shoulder bag."
