While we love Italy’s architecture and cuisine, we are equally grateful to the city for inspiring our favorite summer footwear trend, the gladiator sandal. The ancient style shows no signs of disappearing thanks to jaunts down countless Spring 2015 runways (including the likes of Chloe, Isabel Marant and Giambattista Valli). What makes the style so timeless? The neutral color palette, comfortable and breathable straps and the dash of edginess they offer any outfit probably have a lot to do with it. Most fashion girls consider the leather gladiator to be summer’s answer to the black ankle bootie. Team a short gladiator sandal with an ethereal bohemian dress, or go bold and rock a knee-high pair with a peasant blouse and high-waisted shorts.
