Instagram Is About To Make A Big Change To Your Feed

The chronological Instagram feed as you know it is about to change—the company took to their official blog today to announce their plans for a new and, as they see it, improved experience on the app. Similar to how Facebook filters “important” content personalized to each user, Instagram is implementing a new algorithm to reorder each feed to feature the most decidedly relevant posts. According to the app, “The order of photos and videos in your feed will be based on the likelihood you’ll be interested in the content, your relationship with the person posting and the timeliness of the post.”

While no hard date has been set, the announcement notes users will observe the change “in the coming months.” We’re left wondering if this new approach compromises what Instagram initially set out to do—show what’s happening in real time to friends and followers. And furthermore, what does it mean for the future of advertising on the platform—are we going to have to scroll through sponsored posts before we get to the true content from accounts we’ve elected to see?
