Fall Hair Color Updates To Make, According To Experts

by Kristi Mikesky

While we don’t believe a seasonal shift requires a total hair overhaul, it is a good excuse to switch things up if you’re so inclined. Playing with your color satisfies an itch for a semi-permanent change, and to ensure you make the right kind of updates, who better to look to than a crop of hairstylists to the stars? Here, in-demand mane masters share the hues they’re loving this fall, plus tips for maintaining top-notch color.

"At the moment I love Gigi Hadid—I think she has a great natural blonde that still has depth and brightness. I love all the golden tones in her hair. As does Anna Ewers—the color, texture and overall vibe that both of them have going is right on. Hair at the moment is back to healthy and natural, less blow-dried and just more luscious, '70s Cali girl."

"I am loving so many of the brunette variations we are seeing this fall: Lily Aldridge's coffee ash tones, Mila Kunis' cool black, Angelina Jolie's rich shiny brown and the layered dimension of Jennifer Lopez's bright golden. All are so beautiful! The key for gorgeous brunette color is to keep it super shiny—I like Rodin hair oil and Oribe shine spray. I also suggest using a deep conditioner—either doing full masks or using just on your ends in the shower. One of my favorites is Kerastase's Chroma Rich Masque, which protects against photooxidation [color change as a result of light] and reveals hair's most intense color."

"Fall is the perfect time to stray away from bright blonde hues and opt for warmer, richer tones. I love strawberry blondes and rich auburns to complement the season and brighten the skin—Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Amy Poehler and Blake Lively all have amazing color. Davines makes a great line of pigmented products called Alchemic which is perfect for a temporary wash to test out a color with zero commitment. Whether you’re wanting to make a bold color change or subtle fix, always be sure to go to an experienced professional and trust their opinion for the best results."

"For brunettes, I'm loving a combo of dark caramel and rich honey highlights. For blondes, I'm doing soft, light to medium golden blondes with sandy, medium beige-y colors. To maintain rich, glossy color for both, Oribe's Gold Lust shampoo and conditioner are great, as is Inphenom's Japanese 5-step treatment."

"For brunettes, shades of mocha, chestnut and rich coffee need to have that deep shine that reflects light. Threads of highlights strategically placed, followed up by a pigmented gloss for added polish, will help achieve that goal. Emilia Clarke, Bridget Regan and Anne Hathaway are great examples. For blondes, I'm loving hues ranging from platinum to strawberry to bronze that are subtly blended with lustrous, beachy ropes of highlights. Elizabeth Olsen, Jane Levy, Reese Witherspoon and Chloe Grace Moretz are gorgeous blondes. To maintain fresh color, I'm all about using Christophe Robin's clarifying scrub post-treatment, along with his regenerating mask."

"The beginning of this fall season, there are some amazing reds hitting the red carpet and the street! The trend right now is vibrant and more fiery then previous seasons. On the deeper red end, I’m personally loving the bright, burnt copper hues as seen on Julianne Moore and Jessica Chastain. On the lighter side, I love a strawberry-orange red like Bella Thorne's. (Yes, I said orange!) The color is soft yet vibrant and really goes well with her skin tone."
