Why These Faux Campaigns Are Going Viral

by Erin Bunch

Though it doesn’t always feel awesome that the Internet has given anyone and everyone a platform via which to be heard, there are times when fresh voices create invaluable positive social change we can all be grateful for. Deddeh Howard, a 27-year-old Liberian model living in Los Angeles, has done just that by recreating a host of iconic ad campaigns in which she plays the role of the original—white—model. The series of images, Black Mirror, taken by Deddeh’s photographer boyfriend, have gone viral, drawing attention to the lack of diversity in fashion. “Agencies often tell me, ‘We like your look but there’s a black girl already,'” Deddeh told BuzzFeed News. “It shouldn’t be limited to just one black girl; there can be more than one!” See some of her gorgeous retakes below.
