A Day In The Life Of A Buyer At NYFW

Alongside the highly conspicuous presence of designers, editors and models at fashion week, another key group of industry titans is in attendance: the buyers and bigwigs of the retail world. Integral to what we see in our favorite department stores and boutiques season after season, the presence of this authoritative crew largely dictates the fabric of the global shopping landscape—in other words, they’re a really big deal. Here to dish on a typical day-in-the-life which involves far more than just sitting front row at the shows, Nordstrom’s Director of Creative Projects Olivia Kim shares her photo diary from NYFW. (And when you’re done reading, check out some of Olivia’s current fave picks at the Pop-In@Nordstrom: New Classics shop.)

7:00AM: Spy and I woke up like this, and neither of us is happy about the alarm clock. The only motivation to get me out of bed is coffee!

8:00AM: The sun is out and it's a beautiful morning! Walking to Barry's Bootcamp where I’m about to get my butt (and my arms, abs, biceps and triceps) whooped. I look happy now….

9:30AM: Walking Spy to Washington Square dog park for his morning stroll. I wonder who we will meet today? Oh! A pug named Edgar—Spy wants to show off his back kicks.

10:00AM: En route to Root Studios in Williamsburg for a creative concept meeting for the SPACE Resort/Holiday campaign and editorial. I’m excited to be working with my friend and photographer Max Farago. Here, we're looking at some set design ideas and mood inspiration photos. (You can see the final photos featured on the SPACE website in October!)

12:00PM: I think I found my dream couch at my friend Joey’s office. Let me take a breather…

12:20PM: My friend Adam Selman has a great collection. I’m particularly in love with all his cotton shirting pieces for spring—especially this baby doll dress. This is just so me!

2:00PM: Super minimal and cute display at Lisa Perry’s showroom. I love how her love of art and vintage style is really encapsulated in her clothing. It's all about a dress for Spring '16.

3:00PM: I'm so stoked that one of my favorite websites, The New Potato, is featuring me in an upcoming story. Here, I'm having my photo taken right next to my favorite food truck, Calexico. PS—I haven’t eaten at all yet so its perfect timing to grab the burrito of my dreams. I love these guys!

4:00PM: Super excited to walk through Amanda Phelan’s new collection. She’s talking to me about her dance and art background, and all the research they have put into the production of her knitwear. I’m blown away by it all—and the presentation was incredible with live modern dancers in an East Village theater.

5:00PM: Saying goodbye to New York. I won’t be back here until mid-October cause I’m traveling so much over the next month. I’m on that fashion train! The view from my roof is awesome—I can see the Empire State Building and a sliver of One World Trade. Hasta la vista, for now...
