How To Pull Off A Full Skirt If You’re Petite

The fashion at last night’s MTV Video Music Awards was all about modern, fun twists on iconic items. Case in point: Lucy Hale’s edgy take on the full, ladylike skirt. The young actress-singer — and Rachel Zoe Studio client — opted for a gorgeous floral midi-length style by Zimmermann for her second look of the night. Our styling team’s next challenge was making the voluminous piece work with Lucy’s petite 5’2″ frame!

In lieu of opting for something structured or demure on top, our team chose a leather crop top from Sachin and Babi, the halter neckline giving a nod to the ’90s — a huge trend all around last night. The peek of tummy and barely-there straps helped balance out the fullness of the skirt and felt totally age-appropriate for the 25-year-old.

Minimal yet edgy accessories completed the look: silver ankle-strap heels by Stuart Weitzman, a roll-shaped minaudière, and black-and-silver jewels from Shay Jewelry, EF Collection and Colette Jewelry sealed the deal on this steal-worthy ensemble.
