What is Beyonce’s Lemonade?

by Erin Bunch

Update: Following the release of her HBO special, Bey dropped the entire Lemonade album exclusively on Tidal. In a statement, Tidal said the 12-song album is a “conceptual project based on every woman’s journey of self-knowledge and healing.” Lemonade features guest appearances by Jack White, Kendrick Lamar, James Blake and the Weeknd and features samples from artists like Father John Misty, Led Zepplin, Animal Collective, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Beyoncé’s mysterious HBO Special Lemonade airs tonight at 9 p.m. EST on HBO, which is free all weekend to those who don’t have subscriptions. The cryptic trailer provides few clues as to the content of the hour-long program, but a source told Entertainment Weekly that Lemonade is a “lengthy concept video.” If that means it’s something akin to a one-hour version of her incredible video for “Formation,” we’re so in. Though she’s given nothing away overtly, Beyoncé’s been quietly alluding to Lemonade for a year, posting this selfie with a lemon more than 7 months ago. We’re hoping that the (likely epic) video is in promotion of a new record. In February, the BeyHive announced there would be an album coming soon and asked followers to familiarize themselves with director Kalil Joseph, who’s done videos for FKA Twigs and Kendrick Lamar and is presumed to be the director of whatever it is Yonce has up her sleeves tonight. Stay tuned!
