The Secret Health Craze Sweeping Hollywood

by Erin Bunch

Selena Gomez made an interesting confession to Elle Magazine when asked about her workout schedule on tour recently. “I have a sweat bed, which looks like a burrito that I wrap myself up in, and I sweat for about 45 minutes.” The performer went on to say that the “burrito sweat bed” is actually something mere mortals can pay to experience, and that she goes to a place in LA called Shape House for these concentrated, sauna-esque sweat sessions. “It’s changed my skin, it’s kind of changed my body as well, so it feels really good.”

Other celebrities, such as The Kardashians, Demi Moore, and Rooney Mara, are also allegedly fans of Shape House’s sweat sessions, which aren’t just about losing water weight. The beds use infrared heat technology that’s known to be healing. Plus, just one session in the bed is purported to burn 1,000 calories, and the release of toxins that results from regular use of the bed is said to train your body to release more toxins even without the bed.

Sessions at Shape House start at $36—there are membership options that will save you money if you become as addicted as Selena—but before booking beware that you may not want to plan anything after. “I know it sounds gross,” Selena elaborated to Elle. “But you just sit in your sweat for an hour and don’t immediately shower because there’s natural collagen in your toxins that it actually makes your skin feel softer before you wash it all off.”
