This Is The Queen’s Biggest Vice?

by Erin Bunch

Even though we all know, deep down, that celebrities, royals and other such super-beings are just like us, it helps to hear evidence of this fact from time to time. So, we’re grateful today for former royal chef Darren McGrady, who’s spilling his secrets about cooking for the most famous family in the world—the English royalty. He held the post for 11 years until Princess Diana asked him to be her personal chef back in the ’90s. The author of Eating Royally: Recipes and Remembrances from a Palace Kitchen and The Royal Chef at Home: Easy Seasons Entertaining has given some juicy gossip to Women’s Wear Daily, to which we are clinging to with desperate glee because, well, it’s Tuesday and similarly heartening news is slow as of late. Apparently, Queen Elizabeth II is a chocolate addict (just like us!) who “loved chocolate so much, she’d give it up for Lent.” Her favorite of all the chocolate treats is something called chocolate biscuit cake, which, from what we can tell, is a cake made of tea biscuits. In other news, the Queen once sent a lemon garnish back to the kitchen to be repurposed in a future dish, which reminds us of our Depression-era grandmothers and also of how we’ve been living for the past nine years since the generation before us ruined the economy. Cute!
