It was perhaps the most awkward moment in the show’s history: La La Land was announced the recipient of Best Picture at the 89th Academy Awards, only to have that honor rescinded onstage as mass confusion eventually revealed the true winner, Moonlight. Naturally, social media erupted with polarized reactions as celebrities, comedians and film industry vets all took to Twitter to express their shock.
Others seized the gaffe as a chance to get political.
And some agreed it was a shame for everyone involved.
But overall the responses were lighthearted and well-intentioned, giving due credit to the deserving Moonlight cast and crew.
