George Clooney Proposed To Amal In The Most Romantic Way

by Samantha McDonald

Everybody loves a good proposal story, especially when it involves two of the world’s most beautiful humans. We want to hear every detail, from the carefully chosen words to the act of getting down on one knee—after ogling (and subsequently pining for) the statement engagement ring, of course. So when George Clooney revealed just how he proposed to beautiful and talented human rights lawyer Amal, you can bet we were all ears.

“I plotted the whole thing out,” he said in an interview on the Ellen show. “I had the ring behind her. I had music playing. My aunt Rosemary’s gonna sing ‘Why Shouldn’t I.'”

George cooked dinner, as Amal had just returned from a trip to London, but it didn’t go as planned: “She’s like, ‘Well, maybe we’ll just order in.’ And I go, ‘No, I made dinner.'” After their meal, Amal went to wash the dishes, giving him enough time to blow out the candles and ask her to grab the lighter in the box behind her. “I’ve got the ring sitting in there,” he said. “And she pulls it out, and she looks at it, and she’s like, ‘It’s a ring.'”

He took that moment as his cue: “I got down on my knee and said, ‘I couldn’t imagine spending the rest of my life without you.'” He recalled the proposal took about 25 minutes, which he knew because the playlist they were listening to lasted that long. “I literally said, ‘Look, I hope the answer is yes, but I need an answer because I’m 52 and I could throw out my hip pretty soon.'”

In an appearance on The Late Show, George shared that the couple met at Lake Como, Italy. “She was a friend of a friend who came to visit and then I chased her for many months, calling and writing, those kinds of things,” he said. The proposal happened six months later, and they eventually tied the knot in 2014 and are now expecting twins!
