According to research released this summer by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), a surge in plastic surgery and other cosmetic procedures during the pandemic appears to have stabilized. Still, these treatments continue to grow in popularity. The report also shows that Millennials have normalized these procedures as part of their regular self-care routines, something that appears to be catching on with other generations as well.

As this trend continues, it is imperative that patients emphasize safety and education, especially when managing the deluge of information from commercials and social media. Understanding the difference between great care and false information is becoming increasingly crucial in today’s world.

Plastic surgeon Dr. David Hill points out that this normalization means it is critical for people to take charge of their own health outcomes. He recommends that people considering surgery follow this checklist:

• Research the procedure and surgeon.

• Schedule a consultation before committing.

• Be transparent about your medical history.

• Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

1. Research is essential for finding the right surgeon and clinic.

First, decide what procedure best suits your needs. Research it, but don’t mindlessly click on random websites that the search engine provides. Hill suggests you make sure you’re finding valid medical and knowledge sites that can give you factual information about the procedure you’re considering. Look for reputable plastic surgeons and clinics. Are they properly licensed? Are they affiliated with recognized organizations? At Fulcrum Aesthetics, Hill and his team are comfortable answering these questions and more.

Experience, knowledge, and skill matter in all medical fields, but nowhere is this more obvious than in plastic surgery. Always ask about the surgeon’s background with the specific procedure you are considering.

“Find out how often the surgeon performs the procedure you’re interested in, because frequency indicates proficiency,” Hill explains. “When a surgeon regularly performs a variety of procedures, it ensures they stay updated with the latest techniques.”

2. Always set up a consultation before scheduling a procedure.

Hill points out that in addition to ensuring that the surgery you are seeking is the correct one to achieve your goals, a consultation will also help you address the emotional journey accompanying this decision. Whatever procedure you plan, sitting down with the surgeon can help you understand the intricacies so that you can make informed and confident choices.

Hill stresses that the point of this meeting is to make sure your surgeon has enough information. “During the consultation, we discuss your aesthetic goals, review your medical history, and explore various options to achieve your best results,” he says. “Having a clear understanding of your expectations ahead of time helps me to meet your needs effectively.”

In Chicago, Hill and his wife, Brittony Croasdell, co-manage Fulcrum Aesthetics, which provides their patients with cutting-edge surgical and nonsurgical aesthetic treatments. Croasdell is a nurse practitioner with an extensive background in medical aesthetics and has taught medical topics at the university level.

3. Bring in your medical history, and be transparent about your health issues.

An openness regarding all health issues is a benefit, Hill explains. During the consultation, he will thoroughly review your medical history, including any past surgeries, current medications, and underlying health conditions, to ensure a safe and successful outcome.

“We need to understand every aspect of a patient’s health to minimize risks and maximize results,” says Hill. “Your surgical history may impact how we approach your new procedure, and some medications may need to be adjusted or paused temporarily to ensure safety.”

4. Don’t be shy about questioning the surgeon and staff.

According to Hill, patients should never be shy about asking questions or expressing concerns. “Bring photos of yourself from a younger age if we’re focusing on specific areas,” he suggests. “Remember, having reasonable expectations is very important. My goal is to help you look and feel like the best version of yourself. We’ll work together to make your vision a reality.”

Post-surgical care is essential, too, as is education. At Fulcrum Aesthetics, Hill and Croasdell emphasize a holistic approach that includes skin and body care education, ensuring that patients can maintain their outcomes and enjoy long-lasting benefits from their treatments.

“At Fulcrum Aesthetics, we pride ourselves on expertise recognized and respected internationally,” Hill says. “Brittony and I bring a wealth of experience and a passion for innovation to aesthetic medicine. Our team’s holistic approach ensures patients receive personalized care tailored to their unique needs and goals.”
